Background: Cath has a first class honours degree in Biology and Chemistry, followed by a PGCE at Exeter University. She began teaching in secondary mainstream schools in Devon in 1983. She has subsequently taught in the North East, Manchester, Suffolk, and Northamptonshire across secondary, primary and early years.
Cath was appointed as a hospital teacher at Northampton General Hospital which was part of the newly formed Pupil Referral Unit, Hospital and Outreach Education (HOE), in September 2000, and has worked her way up to become the Headteacher. Currently HOE is the process of setting up a multi academy trust for provisions who provide education for pupils with medical needs, and has been successful in securing a project bid from the Alternative Provision Innovation Fund.
Cath is a National Leader of Education for hospital education.

HOE is a medical pupil referral unit made up of:
- 1 ward on Northampton General Hospital
- 1 ward on Kettering General Hospital
- 3 CAMHS adolescent units, 1 for eating disorders
- 2 outreach centres, one in Northampton and one in Kettering
- Pupils in homes and schools reintegrating back to mainstream
